PEORIA, Ill. – A champion pro basketball player and Peoria native is one of the newest inductees into the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame.
Kirk Wessler, former Peoria Journal Star sports editor and Hall of Fame president, tells WMBD’s “The Greg and Dan Show” former Golden State Warriors star Shaun Livingston is in the Class of 2022.
“High level coaches said, you’d ask off the record, ‘What am I looking at here?’ ‘Magic Johnson,’” Wessler said of Livingston. “The way he saw the floor, the way he distributed the ball, what he could see.”
Wessler says also being inducted is Eric ‘Sheik’ Monti of Pekin won some state high school golf titles before going pro, winning some tournament titles.
“[He] then went into teaching, and became known as the teacher for the celebs. He coached Jack Benny, Kirk Douglas, Dinah Shore,” said Wessler.
Wessler says also in the Class of 2022 will be longtime baseball coach Jerry Rashid, golfer Rick LeHew, basketball player Fred Miller, runner Zach Glavash, wrestler Jeff Simons, the 1975 Princeville and 1983 Washington football teams, and the 1985 Limestone Softball team.
