PEORIA, Ill. – The Peoria City Council is saying no to giving a liquor license to a chain retailer with a location in what Peoria Police calls a “hot spot” area for crime.
Council members unanimously rejected the liquor license for a Family Dollar location on Northeast Jefferson — including District One’s Denise Jackson, who says another liquor license in that area isn’t needed.
“We currently have an In-N-Out store that already provides packaged liquor,” said Jackson. “We’ve had three homicides in that area over the past year.
In a letter (click here to read the letter in PDF format), Police Chief Eric Echevarria cites a number of calls in that area last year, and believes there is neither an economic need nor a community desire for another liquor seller in that area.
