EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka College is honoring the life of a former Supreme Court justice who was appointed by one of their alumni.
President Jamel Wright says flags are flying at half-mast on campus in honor of Sandra Day O’Connor. O’Connor passed away on Friday.
She was the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court, an honor made possible by President Ronald Reagan, a Eureka College graduate.
Wright says O’Connor always kept the Eureka College community in mind.
“Justice O’Connor also supported our fundraising efforts with various donor events at the “O’Connor House,” her former adobe home in Tempe, AZ that is part of the National Register of Historic Places, keeping our community close to her heart from across the country,” Wright said.
O’Connor received an honorary degree from Eureka College and spoke at the convocation in April of 2013.
She will be celebrated as part of the college’s Founder’s Day and Reagan birthday festivities on February 8th.
