OXEN HILL, Maryland – An 8th grader at Dunlap Valley Middle School is moving on in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Kavin Kumar Suriya Prakash of Edwards advanced after correctly spelling “logothete” in the first round, which is a high-ranking official in the Byzantine Empire. He advanced in the second round after correctly defining “compelling.”
Prakash is one of 183 competitors left, with the quarterfinals and semifinals on Wednesday. The finals are Thursday night.
This year is the 100th edition of the National Spelling Bee.
