TREMONT, Ill. – A group of local veterans have been welcoming Tremont grade schoolers back to the classroom for 10 years.
The “fist bumpers” show up every Thursday at Tremont Grade School during the first six weeks of school.
Veteran Ken Lawhorn tells WMBD’s “Greg and Dan Show” the tradition has become a favorite among students and faculty.
“They’re learning about our records as far as we’re veterans…and we’re good guys. We’re not bad guys at all. When you get a thank you and a hug, that hug really makes your day,” Lawhorn says.
TGS Fist Bumping Vets Organizer Rick Otey, a Vietnam vet who served in the Navy, says the group of 24 veterans is getting ready for something big next fall.
“We are honored that we are able to fund and host the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall in September of 2027. It’s a 288-foot long 3/5ths replica of the wall in D.C.”
Otey says the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall will be displayed by Tiber Creek with the help of Tremont Winning Communities.
