PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria Fire officials say 15 rats and a guinea pig died, while 14 birds, two dogs, one cat, and two humans all survived a house fire Monday evening.
Peoria Fire says the blaze causing $50,000 in damage to a home on Peoria Avenue near Gift is so far believed to be accidental. Officials say the fire started in a second floor bedroom.
The two occupants are displaced but are getting help from the Red Cross. The surviving animals were picked up by Peoria County Animal Protection Services.
A cat located during the fire had to be treated with a pet oxygen mask.
No humans were hurt.
