SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias says you can get creative with your license plates, but you have to keep it clean.
Giannoulias on Wednesday says 304 applications for vanity or personalized plates were rejected out of 54,768 sent in, as part of this year’s “License Plate Naughty List.”
“They were denied because they were deemed too obscene or defamatory by our team, which is well-versed in pithy puns, lecherous language, and sneaky swearing,” Giannoulias said.
Applications can be rejected if they can be interpreted as a reference to expletives, racial epithets, sex and drugs, and if it can allude to violence. Some of the examples Giannoulias cited from applications this year include:
- EATBUTT
- BONER
- MILFS
- WOOPASS
- POOPSY
- DZNUTZ
- IOWASUX
In addition, applications can be rejected if it would be difficult to read. Some applications from this year that fell under that category include XKXKKXK and QOOQQOO.
The Secretary of State’s office says the rejection list of combinations that are deemed offensive or difficult to read is now at 7,674.
The state has 811,351 vehicles registered with personalized or vanity plates. A vanity plate is defined as all letters and has a fee of $94. A personalized plate, which is a combination of letter and numbers, is an extra $47.
