PEORIA, Ill. – A man has been sentenced for a shooting in Peoria’s East Bluff last year that left his former girlfriend paralyzed.
25 News reports Deandre Ward was sentenced to 20 years in prison Wednesday for aggravated battery.
Ward was given credit for nearly a year of time served, and must serve at least 85% of the full sentence.
Prosecutors say Ward shot the female victim in the lower back, after the victim was armed with a knife in a fight with another female.
At the sentencing hearing, the victim cried while giving her impact statement, saying she is unable to bathe herself, use the bathroom alone, and has lost a significant amount of weight.
Ward apologized for his actions at the hearing.
