PEORIA, Ill. – A cool drink at Peoria’s Northmoor Primary School on Thursday helped support a good cause.
The school’s 3rd graders spent the day along Northmoor Road, encouraging motorists and the neighborhood to come buy a glass of lemonade. It was part of a fundraising effort by the students for Alex’s Lemonade Stand.
The Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation raises money to help fight childhood cancer and find cures. The organization has raised more than $300 million and funded more than 1,500 research projects.
3rd grade students at Northmoor have participated each year since 2014. Teacher Shelley Henderson says the goal each year is to raise $500, but around $1,000 was raised last year.
Henderson says the day is also a lesson in empathy.
“Just caring about others, teaching them about what families go through when a family member does have cancer,” Henderson said.
Those looking to buy a cup could walk up to the table in front of Northmoor Primary, or use a drive-thru lane, which Henderson says was initiated last year.
