PEORIA, Ill. – The Peoria Park District is looking for a sustainable path forward for Detweiller Park.
At Wednesday night’s meeting, the Board of Trustees authorized reaching out to stakeholders, including the Detweillier Marina Trust, to form that path.
In a statement, Board President Robert Johnson says the goal is to work towards a management and ownership structure that keeps the property as a recreational asset, and addresses long-term financial stability.
Johnson stated that the property is an “important combination of natural environment, recreational opportunity, public access to the Illinois River, and connection to Peoria’s history.”
Johnson says the move by trustees is the start of the process, and is urging continued participation of residents, Detweiller Trust, government and community partners, and other stakeholders.
The property was left as a trust by Thomas Detweiller, and has been the subject of a potential purchase by nearby O’Brien Steel.
