PEORIA, Ill. – OSF HealthCare Children’s Hospital of Illinois has opened a new clinic in Peoria for children and adolescents experiencing heavy menstrual bleeding.
The clinic brings pediatric hematology and pediatric and adolescent gynecology together in one location to evaluate and treat patients.
Heavy menstrual bleeding, also known as menorrhagia, can include periods lasting more than a week or bleeding heavy enough to soak through a pad or tampon every hour for several consecutive hours. The condition can interfere with daily activities and lead to anemia.
OSF says heavy menstrual bleeding can be linked to several factors, including hormonal imbalances, bleeding disorders and infections, although the cause is not always known.
The clinic will also evaluate patients who have symptoms but have not been diagnosed with a bleeding disorder. Patients who need additional care can receive ongoing treatment through the clinic.
OSF says fewer than 50 specialized clinics in the U.S. are dedicated to addressing bleeding disorders in women and girls.
The clinic is located at OSF HealthCare Children’s Hospital of Illinois on Northeast Glen Oak Avenue in Peoria.
