WASHINGTON, Ill. – Following a shooting incident and explosion on Mother’s Day, Washington’s police chief recalls how he was alerted to the situation.
Police Chief Jeff Stevens tells WMBD’s “Greg and Dan Show” he received a call around 4:30 a.m. from the deputy director of the county-wide dispatch.
CERT, Central Illinois’ Community Emergency Response Team, was the first on the scene at Mallard Way.
“That is a regional SWAT team. We’ve got members on it, Washington PD, Tazewell County, Peoria County, Fulton County, yeah,” Stevens says.
The chief says 20 Washington officers responded either directly to the incident, or to cover normal leads.
“Because the world doesn’t stop just because you’ve got an incident on Mallard Way,” Stevens says.
In total, over 100 police, fire, paramedics and public works personnel were on-scene.
The suspect was eventually taken into custody, and then transferred to OSF St. Francis Medical Center. The extent of their injuries was not released.
Illinois State Police have not released any details related to their investigation of the shooting.
Residents of several homes affected by the fire are being helped by the Red Cross.
